敦煌石窟 —— The Dunhuang Caves
敦煌石窟，又名莫高窟，俗称千佛洞，位于甘肃省敦煌市东南，始建于公元366年，隋、唐至元代均有修建。现存有壁画、雕塑的共486窟，彩塑多姿多彩，壁画瑰丽华艳，展现了由晋到元中国艺术的不同风格，堪称中国古代艺术史的百科全书。其中尤以飞天特别值得一提，这些漫天飞舞的仙女，或手捧莲蕾，或反弹琵琶，妙曼多姿，美不胜收。敦煌石窟世上现存最大、保留最完好的佛教艺术宝库，被誉为“东方的卢浮宫”。1987年被列为世界文化遗产。Dunhuang Caves, also called Mogao Caves or Caves of the Thousand Buddhas, are located in the southeast of Dunhuang, Gansu Province. The construction got started from 366AD and went on during the Sui and Tang Dynasty. There are altogether 486 caves of murals and statues, all of which are colorful and magnificent. They can be viewed as an encyclopedia of ancient Chinese art, reflecting the different art styles from Jin to Yuan Dynasties. What is especially worth mentioning is Feitian, who are exceedingly beautiful and elegant fairy maidens holding lotus buds or playing the pipa backwards. As the largest and best preserved treasure house of Buddhist art in the world, the Mogao Caves are recognized as “Louvre Museum of the East”. And it was ranked on the World Cultural Heritage List in 1987.
