Dunhuang Caves, also called Mogao Caves or Caves of the Thousand Buddhas, are located in the southeast of Dunhuang, Gansu Province. The construction got started from 366AD and went on during the Sui and Tang Dynasty. There are altogether 486 caves of murals and statues, all of which are colorful and magnificent. They can be viewed as an encyclopedia of ancient Chinese art, reflecting the different art styles from Jin to Yuan Dynasties. What is especially worth mentioning is Feitian, who are exceedingly beautiful and elegant fairy maidens holding lotus buds or playing the pipa backwards. As the largest and best preserved treasure house of Buddhist art in the world, the Mogao Caves are recognized as “Louvre Museum of the East”. And it was ranked on the World Cultural Heritage List in 1987.
